MotivationWhat it solves
Consistency. Every custom style is built independently of Word's built-in Normal style. Normal is the style most often silently overwritten — by a colleague's Word settings, by a template attached to the file, by a document converter. Keeping your styles off that dependency means a document's formatting travels with the file itself, not with whichever machine or app happens to open it.
Stability. Clause numbering and Schedule restarts are handled by Word's own list engine, not typed characters, so the sequence doesn't drift when sections are added, removed or reordered.
Speed. Structure is pre-built: formatting a document means applying a style, not manually fixing fonts, spacing and numbering paragraph by paragraph.
What this is not
A finished contract. The sample Non-Disclosure Agreement included with the template exists to demonstrate the styles in use — you're buying the formatting system, not legal advice or a ready-to-sign agreement. It's also built for desktop Microsoft Word: Quick Parts, content controls and linked fields are Word features, and may not behave the same in Word Online, Google Docs or other editors.
Built as real Word list levels, not typed characters: 1 / 1.1 / 1.1.1 / (a) / (i). Renumbering after an insert or deletion is automatic.
pre-configured to restart at 1 for every new Schedule. This is the single most common manual-numbering mistake in Word — here it's solved by construction, not by remembering to right-click "Restart at 1.
The Styles pane shows only what this document type actually needs: body text, continuation indents, five levels of numbered clauses, bullets, table text, figure/table captions with source lines, subheads and internal drafting notes.
For text data, right-aligned numeric columns, and a dedicated signing-block layout — plus a header row style that's wired to repeat on every page a table spans, without an extra manual step per table
So a caption never reads "Table 3" twice after a table gets added or removed
Built on real heading levels — the same levels power Word's Navigation Pane and PDF bookmarks, so both work without extra setup
Company, Effective Date, Version/Status, Document ID, Governing Law, Classification, Review Cycle, plus a version-history table. The key fields are true content controls — click and type, no leftover placeholder brackets possible.
Free-text fields (addresses, names) still use bracketed placeholders, but they carry their own character style, so any placeholder you add yourself can be marked up the same way — then found in one pass before sending (Find & Replace by style, or by the bracket pattern), the same check legal drafters already run before a document goes out
A landscape-orientation spread for wide tables, and a self-contained Schedule/appendix block with its own numbering already attached
Including a distinct first (cover) page treatment separate from the running pages — no manual section breaks required
Not hard-coded per style, so a full font or color swap is a two-click change (Design tab) instead of editing every style by hand
Included with the template, that explains why Word documents misbehave in general and how to keep this one stable long-term — configuring Word's own settings, using styles instead of manual formatting, and a pre-send checklist
Opens cleanly, no security warnings
